Sharks may be able to grow new teeth as the old ones are lost, but we sadly don’t. Enter dental implants – a permanent solution to replace any gaps in your teeth. Now that’s something to smile about.
Dental Implant Benefits
It stands to reason that the teeth you start growing at six years old might not be around half a century later. This can affect the surrounding teeth and gums, and change your bite causing issues with both form and function. Dental implants secure into the bone of your jaw, mimicking your natural teeth in appearance and performance. Dental implants replace tooth function as well as the natural aesthetics of your bite and smile, making them a successful option to replace missing teeth permanently. With no damage to other teeth or surrounding tissues, it’s often a better alternative to bridges, and can be used to replace a single tooth, multiple teeth, or to support a full denture.
What is a dental implant?
Dental implants are essentially like a titanium screw which is permanently secured into the bone of your jaw. They are the ideal way to replace a missing tooth as they mimick your natural teeth in appearance and performance.
The dental implant acts as the root of the tooth once it is placed into your jaw. From here the implant can be restored with a porcelain crown, a bridge or even a denture. In some cases, you can even have your teeth removed and replaced in the same day.
Why should I have a dental implant?
The success rates of dental implants have shown to be very high once the implant has integrated into the bone. This makes this treatment a natural and conservative option to replace as little as one missing tooth or multiple teeth.
Dental implants are regarded as the optimum treatment for:
- Replacing a single or multiple missing teeth
- There is no damage to surrounding teeth
- Results which look and feel natural
- Preventing bone loss and gum problems
- Giving your lips and cheeks support, giving you a younger looking face
- Do not damage your other healthy teeth
- Help you with your digestion by allowing you to eat all types of food
- Very high long term success rates – much higher than dentures or bridgework.
Will a dental implant be a good option for me?
Good dental hygiene is critical in keeping infection at bay. Non-smokers and patients with good oral hygiene habits put themselves in a much better position for a full and fast recovery. Smokers will typically be encouraged to stop smoking beforehand to improve the odds of successful surgery. If properly constructed and cared for, most dental implants should last a lifetime.

Dental Implant Procedure
At Sydney Cosmetic Dentistry, we are proud to have an implant consultant, Dr Glenn Willey, to place dental implants for our patients. Dr Glenn Willey has over 25 years’ experience in dental implants and is meticulous in his surgery and care of his patients. He regularly attends training courses and conferences to keep up to date in this specialised field of den stry, and has trained many other dentists in the surgical placement of implants.
Each patient who is interested in a dental implant will discuss their individual needs during the initial consultation, and receive a thorough diagnosis and treatment plan. A 3D scan will be required to provide further information regarding bone and jaw structure, which assists with the correct type of implant and position for it to be placed. Dr Willey will ensure that your will have your dental implant/s placed accurately to facilitate the fitting of your final prosthesis.
Your surgical procedure will take place in a calm and comfortable environment at Sydney Cosmetic Dentistry under local anaesthetic or sedation. After the implant is placed, you will have stitches placed to help with the healing. In many cases you will have a temporary restoration made, or if you have an immediate implant placed, you may receive your final crown on the same day. Usually dental implants are left in place to heal and integrate for about three months with a provisional prosthesis. Once the titanium screw ‘osseointegrates’ it performs the function of the root of the tooth; on top of this screw is placed a beautifully sculpted porcelain crown, to restore your beautiful smile.
Why choose us for your dental implant?
Your dental implant will be an investment regardless of which dentist in Sydney you visit. However it is important to ensure that you visit a reputable dentist for this procedure, as it does require years of extensive training and experience.
Like most things in life, you get what you pay for. The prices of dental implants can vary considerably, however you must consider what you are paying for. With something as precious as your teeth, which are used non-stop, every day, it is worth making the investment in quality.
The main reasons for differences in pricing include:
- The type of implant the dentist uses to place in your jaw (the quality of the components, if they are made in Australia or overseas)
- The expertise and experience of the dentist (years experience, where they studied, affiliations/memberships/credentials)
- The origin of your crown (a laboratory in Sydney, a mass production centre or overseas)
- Your current oral health (some issues may need to be addressed prior to implants).
With 25 years of expertise and experience, Dr Glenn Willey will always tailor your treatment to your condition. Many dentists will advocate a certain dental implant procedure for all cases, however this can cause more problems in some situations. After your consultation with Dr Glenn Willey, he will modify a treatment plan to cater to your specific requirements and may suggest more appropriate treatment strategies if needed.
